On Tuesday 23rd November, year 9 took part in a virtual English At Work Day. Due to the current pandemic, sadly this event had to go online, but it as still just as informative. Year 9 students heard from eight different speakers about the English skills they use in their workplace. We even had a famous YouTuber and ex-Priory pupil contribute! Year 9 pupil, Poppy Clare said, “In the English At Work presentation, I found all the videos really helpful. They enabled me to think how critical English is for all our future carers. All the aspects of English (complex language, communication, data analysis, etc) that are necessary for a variety of jobs were highlighted throughout the presentations, helping me realise how vital all areas of this subject are. My attention was especially drawn to how much of a range of English skills will help our future carers.”
Charlotte Reese added: “I found all the presentations helpful for GCSE options. It showed me how English is a key part of any career – this motivated me to take more care and attention towards English language and literature.”
A massive thank you to all those speakers who gave up their time to converse with staff, and to plan and film these videos: Dr Paul Flanagan – Chester University – Senior Lecturer in English Language; Dr James Brown - Aston University – Associate Dean and Lecturer in the School of Health and Life Sciences; Amica Davies Speech and language therapist; Fred Pye – YouTube Content Creator; Debbie Brown – NHS; Shrewsbury Colleges Group; Alun Owen; Armed Forces Careers Office (RAF), Telford College and Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors.
We hope that next year we can welcome all these wonderful and motivational speakers into the school for a more traditional English At Work Day.
