Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 - Visit by Natalie Cumming

Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 - Visit by Natalie Cumming
posted 31 Jan 2019

As part of the commemoration for Holocaust Memorial Day, local author, Natalie Cumming visited The Priory School to talk about her book, ‘The Fiddle’, which tells the story of her family’s experience of persecution against Jews in the twentieth century.

Students gathered to hear Mrs Cumming talk about her grandfather’s escape from the Russian Revolution and the Jewish pogroms, and her aunt’s harrowing internment in Auschwitz at the hands of the Nazis. A poignant and timely tale of how despicable human nature can be, but also an uplifting story of how an instrument brought hope to its owners. Mrs Cumming then answered questions from the students.

Also present was Councillor Nic Laurens, who spoke briefly to the students about the importance of remembering the Holocaust and other genocides even in Shropshire. Councillor Laurens helped to plant The Priory School’s Tree of Remembrance two years ago and is a keen supporter of the school’s Holocaust remembrance project.

Mrs Cumming will be returning to The Priory later on in the year to see the cross curricular work produced as a result of this visit.
