Tuesday 14th of May saw the year 7 Girls team travel away to Alder Grange School in Rossendale, Lancashire, in the semi-final of the National Cup.
After winning the County Cup against Madeley Academy 7-0 just a week and a half earlier, the girls went into the game strong spirited but feeling the nerves. It proved to be a proper semi-final with both teams playing some outstanding football. 0-0 at half time with Priory having most of the possession but Alder Grange having the better chances. Second half was all Priory with and excellent defensive display from the home team stopping any clear cut chances. Final score remained at 0-0.
The first half of extra time saw Priory continue their domination but still unable to break the score line. The last 5 of the second half of extra time saw Alder Grange push for the victory. A tense last few minutes and the game remained goalless.
Penalties - Priory won the toss and elected to take first with Lucy calmly hitting the ball into the corner of the goal. Alder Grange scored. Bess banged in a belter, Alder Grange did the same. Ella converted and Priory’s delight, Becca made a strong save, 3-2 after 3 penalties, advantage Priory. Tilly found the bottom corner to make it 4 out of 4. Alder Grange had to score to stay in and the Priory team, including its supporters erupted with elation as they saw the ball blaze over the bar.
An absolute triumph for the team and heads held high going into the final.
