HOUSE READING CHALLENGE & A NEW LIBRARY CLUB - EXCELSIOR
Acton were our clear winners of the library House Reading Challenge 2017. We have been monitoring and tracking library loans since the first day of Spring (20th March 2017). Acton easily borrowed the most books during this period (even allowing for some super quick returns!). The final house placings in order were 1)Acton 2)Webb, 3)Housman 4)Darwin 5)Baxter and 6)Clive.
Celebratory tubs of sweets and chocolates for the winning Acton form groups were distributed to share just before half-term. Form tutors and Heads of House really got in involved and encouraged the students to visit the library more and 'out read' each other. The year 7 and year 9 students particularly embraced the competition and we have lots of personal book recommendations from pupils within each house displayed in the library. It's been a successful trial and we will try and run something similar again next year, maybe for a longer period of time.
Also in the library some of our student helpers - Brandon Garner 9C and Isobel Paterson-Hickey 9D - have helped set up a new library club. 'Excelsior' now runs every Thursday lunchtime in the library and allows like-minded students to drop in and browse, read and discuss manga, graphic novels and comic books. Brandon has designed a club poster which has been displayed around school and both have helped select new resources for the club. Art materials are also provided for drawing and sketching work around these genres and snacks/drinks are provided. If anyone is interested in attending please see Mrs Edwards (school librarian) or pupils can just pop in to the library on Thursdays from 1pm.
